The word 'Ayurveda' comes from the word 'ayur' meaning 'life' and the word 'veda' meaning 'to know'. Ayurveda means 'the science of life', and is a medical system practiced in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Ayurveda's mythological origins, though, are attributed to the Indo-European Nasatya or Aswins, twin physicians of the gods of the ancient Indo-European pantheon. Four thousand year old references to the Nasatya are found in the now extinct, Hurrian and Hittite languages in Turkey, and in the Sanskrit language in India. Ayurveda is considered the upaveda or accessory Veda to the Atharva Veda. The four Vedas are the world's oldest literary documents in an Indo-European language.

A classic Ayurvedic text, that parallels the time frame of the Atharva Veda, is the Charaka Samhita. Written in the Indus Valley area around 1000 B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) in Sanskrit, it is a treatise on general medicine. Dr. West Graduated form Chico State University in 1970 and in 1974 earned a post graduate degree yielding a California State Teaching Credential. He then taught elementary, middle school, high school, and adult education curriculum in Northern California. Naturally Occurring™ Standards Group:

The Naturally Occurring Standard (NOS) is being established initially for the purpose of identifying, certifying, labeling, and verifying the naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients in all food products including bulk food materials, nutritional supplements and fortified foods and for the purpose of expressing a clear distinction between naturally occurring vitamins and nutrient containing naturally occurring products and those that contain synthetic vitamins and nutrients.

The current quantitative and qualitative standards for vitamins and other essential nutrients are those listed by (Recommended Daily Allowance) RDA's or (Recommended Daily Intake) RDI's for understanding nutrient activity.  Label disclosure and other nutrient details related to food supplements and fortified foods are originally based upon synthetic quantities mostly developed upon animal research studies conducted over 60 years ago. There is no qualitative or quantitative standard currently available for understanding non-synthetic, naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients potencies for the purpose of labeling or publication as related to our fortified foods and dietary supplements. This situation is confusing in general not only for natural food supplement and food product developers, but also for consumers who should be informed about the distinction that exists between naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients obtained only and directly from food and botanical sources created by nature as opposed to man-made synthetic vitamins and nutrients produced in laboratories. Therefore, a new standard, the NOS, is being developed as related to naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients.
