Product Information N-Acetyl-Cysteine is an endogenous form of Cysteine produced from Cysteine within the body and also widely regarded as the preferred form of Cysteine for supplementation. All of the health benefits associated with regular Cysteine and which are described in the topic for Cysteine are equally applicable to N-Acetyl-Cysteine (in many cases NAC provides greater therapeutic benefits compared to regular Cysteine). PROPRIETARY NAME (and dosage form): N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) (capsules) COMPOSITION: Each capsule contains the following as active ingredients: N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)...................................500mg Inactive ingredients are included: Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatine free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian - flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide. Contains no colourants, preservatives, lactose, gluten, yeast, starch or artificial fillers. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine. L-cysteine is converted to glutathione, which is a potent anti-oxidant in the body. Unlike glutathione, NAC easily crosses the cell membrane and is thus a very efficient way of replenishing glutathione and reducing damage from free radicals. The anti-oxidant and free radical properties of glutathione explain its liver protection and detoxification effects. This may also explain its usefulness in pulmonary and cardiac disease. NAC also chelates heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury and thus may be useful in heavy metal poisoning. NAC also appears to reduce cellular production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, and interleukin 1. NAC may also have anti-carcinogenic properties by inhibiting the invasive activity of tumour cells and angiogenesis of tumour cells. NAC appears to increase the synthesis of nitric acid, which is a potent inhibitor of platelet function. HIV individuals have lower levels of cysteine and thus benefit from NAC supplementation, with their TNF-α levels falling and by stabilising or increasing their CD4+ levels. NAC has been also shown to reduce tobacco smoke carcinogenicity in humans. NAC has been successfully used since the early 1960’s for the treatment of bronchitis and as a prophylatic in individuals with chronic bronchitis. Pharmacokinetics: After oral administration of NAC, maximum plasma concentration is reached in approximately 45 minutes. With a dose of 250 mg/m2, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) is about 1.75 mcg/mL. The half life of NAC is about 2 hours. INDICATIONS: NAC is an amino acid that boosts the levels of the body’s natural anti-oxidant known as glutathione, which is essential for liver function and detoxification. NAC is excellent for preventing hangovers and protecting the liver from alcohol and other toxins. NAC also enhances immune, brain, heart and lung function. NAC is important for smokers as it helps protect the lungs from the damaging effects of tobacco smoke. NAC also aids in the treatment of bronchitis and in lessening attacks in chronic bronchitis and COPD sufferers. NAC also has anti-carcinogenic effects and helps prevent muscle loss in strength athletes. CONTRA-INDICATIONS: Concomitant use of NAC and intravenous nitroglycerin can cause severe low blood pressure and intolerable headaches. WARNINGS: NOTE: NAC has a naturally unpleasant odour. This is NOT a sign of an expired or compromised product. Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a healthcare provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. INTERACTIONS: Activated choarcoal: NAC appears to reduce the capacity of activated charcoal to absorb paracetamol and salicylic acid. Nitrate medications: Concurrent use with angina nitrate heart medication can cause low blood pressure and headache. PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING: NAC has been safely used in pregnancy but the dose should not exceed one capsule daily. Safe for use during breast-feeding. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Adults and children over 12 years of age: For general liver health and detoxification, or for use in smokers, or for supporting lung, heart, brain or immune function, or for use during strength training, take 1 capsule twice daily. To prevent hangovers and reduce alcohol liver toxicity, take 4 capsules with 2 large glasses of water immediately after drinking. Can be taken with or without meals. Ideally take 1000mg of SOLAL Double Vitamin C™ daily when taking NAC to improve effectiveness. Children 7-12 years of age: Take half the adult dose. SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Side effects: NAC can cause mild gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting; skin rash and allergy. KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. In the case of accidental overdose of the product, contact the nearest hospital or poison control centre. IDENTIFICATION: Clear vegetarian capsule shell (size 0) containing white contents.
