Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound that exists in nature as cis- and trans- stereoisomers. Trans-resveratrol appears to be the primary active form. Resveratrol is primarily found in over 70 plant species including red wine, red grape skins, purple grape juice, mulberries, and in smaller amounts in peanuts. Trans-resveratrol is also found in blueberries and bilberries. Other sources include eucalyptus (Eucalyptus wandoo, Eucalyptus sideroxylon), spruce (Picea excelsa), and Bauhinia racemosa, Polygonum cuspidatum (Hu Zhang) or knotweed, the roots of which are used in Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine, is considered to be one of the richest sources of trans-resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown in animal and laboratory studies to exhibit antioxidant, anticancer, antiproliferative, antifungal, and antibacterial effects. Preliminary research indicates that chronic administration of resveratrol can increase lifespan, improve heart function and reduce the risk of cancer.Grape seed extract contains phenolic compounds including oligomeric proanthrocyanidins (OPC), proanthocyanidins, flavonols and polyflavan-3-ols. Grape flavonoids have a wide variety of effects including antioxidant, vasodilating, anti-lipoperoxidant activity, and antiplatelet activity that may prevent heart disease. Grape seed proanthocyanidins inhibit UV-radiation-induced oxidative stress and activation of MAPK and NF-kappa Beta signaling in human epidermal keratinocytes.
Resveratrol is rapidly absorbed with peak concentrations occurring within 30 minutes. At low doses of 0.3 mg/kg, over 50% of the resveratrol is excreted in the urine within 24 hours. With higher doses of 1mg/kg, about 25% is excreted in the urine within 24 hours. Resveratrol is conjugated in the intestine and absorbed as the conjugated form. In plasma, resveratrol is found primarily as glucuronide or sulfate form. Grape seed extract is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract with maximum blood levels observed within 45 minutes and an estimated half life of five hours.
Resveratrol assists in the following:
• Extension of the lifespan of cells
• Protects against cancers and heart disease
• Brain protecting antioxidant effect
• Reduces the formation of skin wrinkles
• Helps build new collagen and protect skin-elastin fibres
• Assists with ocular stress from computer glare
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy.
Safety in children has not been established.
Warfarin and anticoagulants: Use cautiously in patients taking anticoagulants such as warfarin, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory or antiplatelet agents, as OPCs may alter platelet function and aggregation
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s): Resveratrol competitively inhibits monoamine oxidase A and thus should be used with caution in individuals using monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s).
Cytochrome P450 3A4: Resveratrol might inhibit the cytochrome P450 3A4 enzymes and thereby increase the levels of the caffeine, chlordiazepoxide, clomipramine, clopidogrel, clozapine, diazepam, estradiol, flutamide, fluvoxamine, haloperidol, imipramine, mexiletine, mirtazapine, naproxen, nortriptyline , olanzapine, ondansetron, propafenone , propranolol, ropinirole, theophylline, verapamil, warfarin, lovastatin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fexofenadine, triazolam, use with caution.
Methotrexate: Use cautiously in individuals on methotrexate therapy due to a theoretical risk of increased methotrexate toxicity via inhibition of xanthine oxidase.
ACE inhibitors: Use with caution with ACE inhibitors as can inhibit angiotensin-1 converting enzyme activity by non-competitive inhibition.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING:
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, do not use.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Adults and children over 12 years of age: Take 1 capsule twice daily.
Children 7-12 years of age: Take 1 capsule daily. Take with or shortly after meals.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Resveratrol is generally well tolerated, but can cause the following side effects: dizziness, urticaria, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and headache.
Hormone sensitive conditions: Since resveratrol may have estrogenic effects, women with hormone sensitive conditions should avoid resveratrol. Some of these conditions include breast, uterine, ovarian cancer, and endometriosis and uterine fibroids.
Surgery: Discontinue use at least two weeks prior to surgery or dental procedures, due to the altered platelet function and aggregation effects.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
