Product Information GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT may kill or suppress many (more than 900) types of detrimental micro-organisms including detrimental bacteria, viruses, fungi, moulds and yeasts including candida albicans. PRODUCT INFORMATION FOR GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT COMPOSITION: Each capsule contains the following as active ingredients: Grapefruit seed standardised proprietary extract ..........................125mg Inactive ingredients: Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatin free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian – flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide. Contains no colourants, preservatives, lactose, gluten, yeast, starch or artificial fillers. Contains plant extracts and natural fillers, with no colourants added - therefore the colour of the capsule contents may vary slightly from batch to batch. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: Grapefruit seed extract contains numerous constituents including naringin and other flavonoid contents. The flavonoid content is attributed to its in vitro inhibition of the growth of some bacteria, yeasts, and moulds (Streptococcus species, Staphlococcus aureus, enterococci, Enterobacter, E. coli, Candida, Geotrichum, Aspergillus, and Penicillium species). Grapefruit seed extract has also been reported to reduce counts of Salmonella typhimurium. INDICATIONS: Grapefruit seed contains a substance called Naringin which inhibits the growth of some bacteria, yeasts, and molds (including Streptococcus species, Staph. Aureus, Enterococci, Enterobacter, E.coli, Candida, Geotrichum, Aspergillus and Penicillium species). CONTRA-INDICATIONS: There are no known contra-indications. WARNINGS: Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. INTERACTIONS: Arthemether: Grapefruit seed increases the oral bioavailability of artemether in healthy men by 90% to 250%. Benzodiazepines: Grapefruit seed can increase plasma triazolam concentrations. Buspirone: Grapefruit seed increases absorption and plasma concentrations of buspirone. Caffeine: Grapefruit seed decreases caffeine clearance. Calcium channel blockers: Grapefruit seed increases the absorption and plasma levels of amlodipine, nifedipine, nisoldipine, felodipine, nimodipine, nicardipine, diltiazem, and verapamil and others. Carbamazepine: Grapefruit seed increases absorption and plasma concentrations of carbamazepine. Carvedilol: Grapefruit seed increases the bioavailability of carvedilol. Clomipramine: Grapefruit seed increases absorption and plasma concentrations of cyclosporine. Cytochrome P450 3A4: Grapefruit seed can inhibit CYP3A4 metabolism of medicines. Some medicines metabolised by CYP3A4 might include amitriptyline, amiodarone, praziquantel, citalopram, erythromycin, felodipine, lansoprazole, ondansetron, prednisone, scopolamine, sertraline, sibutramine, sildenafil and many others. Dextromethophan: Grapefruit seed can increase the levels and increase the risk of side-effects. Estrogens: Grapefruit seed can increase the levels of estrogens. Etoposide: Grapefruit seed may decrease the absorption. Fexofenadine: Grapefruit seed can significantly decrease oral absorption and blood levels. HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors (Statins): Grapefruit seed inhibits the metabolism and increases absorption and plasma concentrations of lovastatin, simvastatin and atorvastatin. Itraconazole: Grapefruit seed impairs itraconazole absorption. Losartan: Concomitant use with grapefruit seed might reduce losartan effectiveness. Methylprednisolone: Grapefruit seed can increase plasma concentration of orally administered methylprednisone. Quinidine: Grapefruit seed decreases quinidine clearance. Terfenadine: Grapefruit seed increases absorption and plasma concentrations of terfenadine. Theophylline: Grapefruit seeds modestly decrease theophylline levels. Warfarin: Grapefruit seed may increase warfarin effects. PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING: Not to be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Adult and children over 12 years of age: Take 1-2 capsules twice daily with or without meals. Children 7-12 years of age: Take 1 capsule twice daily with or without meals. If used for a bacterial infection and no relief is obtained within 7 days of use, seek medical advice. SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Side effects: Grapefruit extract seed is generally well tolerated with rare reports of allergy. Special precautions: Breast cancer: Preliminary research shows that grapefruit seed reduces the metabolism of estrogen, leading to higher levels of estrogen. Women with or at risk of breat cancer should avoid using grapefruit seed. KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. In the case of accidental overdose of the product, contact the nearest hospital or poison control centre. IDENTIFICATION: Clear vegetarian capsule shell (size 0) containing red/brown contents. PRESENTATION: White HDPE container with white HDPE screw cap and seal for protection. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Store in a cool dry place, out of the reach of children.
