A blend of three safe, non-addictive and effective herbal extracts that hasten the onset of sleep, prolongs sleep duration, and provides healthy restorative sleep, by maintaining sleep architecture. No groggy hang-over effect or dry mouth the next morning. Prescription sleeping tablets put you into a permanent level 1, 2 or 3 sleep, with no REM sleep. They give you quantity of sleep but with no sleep architecture - no quality restorative sleep.
What is Herbal Sleep?
Herbal sleep is a blend of three safe, non-addictive and effective herbal extracts that hasten the onset of sleep, prolong sleep duration, and provide healthy restorative sleep, by maintaining sleep architecture.
What is sleep architecture?
Whilst sleeping, the body cycles through 5 different levels of sleep (awake – level 4). These levels are known as sleep stages and each serves a different purpose for healing and detoxifying the body, rejuvenating the mind, and structuring / filing thought processes and memories. This cyclical pattern of light sleep, deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is called sleep architecture. It is important, not only to get enough sleep, but to get the right kind of sleep. In other words, it is important to maintain healthy sleep architecture. Without it, we may get quantity of sleep, but we don’t get quality sleep (restorative sleep).
Healthy Sleep Architecture:
The entire cycle normally occurs in 90-minute periods, providing approximately four to five cycles in an 8-hour period. The proportions and duration of each stage are critical to the restorative quality of the cycle. Research has shown that restorative sleep requires three to five uninterrupted sleep cycles.
Experts currently believe that the third and fourth sleep stages are responsible for body restoration and REM for strengthening and organizing memory. The cycle continues throughout the sleep period, with each REM stage increasing in length.
Difficulty falling asleep (which results in shorter sleep times), or too frequent / lengthy wakening during the night, tends to keep the body in the lighter stages (stage 2). This makes it difficult to transition to deeper sleep, thereby reducing the ability to get the important third and fourth stages that are required for sleep to be restorative.
Prescription sleeping tablets (the benzodiazepines) DO NOT maintain sleep architecture. They put you into a permanent level 1, 2 or 3 sleep, with no REM sleep. They give you quantity of sleep BUT WITH NO SLEEP ARCHITECTURE - NO QUALITY RESTORATIVE sleep.
How does Herbal Sleep Work?
Herbal Sleep Contains 3 Herbal Extracts:
Valerian 5:1 extract - Valerian root makes getting to sleep easier and increases deep sleep and dreaming. Valerian does not cause a morning “hangover,” a side effect common to prescription sleeping medicines. A double-blind trial found that valerian extract is comparable in efficacy to oxazepam (Serapax®), a commonly prescribed medicine for insomnia. In a separate double-blind trial, the same amount of valerian extract was found to improve subjective assessments of sleep quality and certain aspects of brain function during sleep as well.
Corydalis 10:1 extract - Corydalis contains several ingredients, one of which has been shown to influence the nervous system, promoting relaxation. People with insomnia are able to fall sleep more easily after taking corydalis extract. People taking the extract reported no drug hangover symptoms, such as dizziness or vertigo.
Passionflower 10:1 extract – Passion flower induces a restful and deep sleep (level 3-4) free from frequent awakenings and disturbances. Passion flower also alleviates anxiety, by sedating the central nervous system, thereby making it easier to fall asleep:
Who should use Herbal Sleep?
Herbal Sleep is safe and effective for adults and children over 12 years of age who are finding it difficult to fall asleep or to stay asleep. Herbal sleep should be the first choice for these patients. However, if you are over 50 years of age, then the probable cause of your insomnia is low levels of a natural sleeping hormone called melatonin (younger people have adequate levels of melatonin). In such a case, melatonin tablets should be your first choice of a sleep aid. Herbal sleep can safely be used with melatonin, if a top up sleeping formula is needed.
Is herbal sleep safe and non-addictive?
Herbal sleep contains no addictive substances and the development of tolerance is rare (tolerance is a situation where a product becomes less effective with prolonged use). Where tolerance does develop, it is mild, and quickly disappears if a break from the product of about one week is taken for every 4 weeks of continuous use. No withdrawal symptoms have been reported with any of the herbal components used in herbal sleep.
What is the dosage?
Adults and Children over 16 years of age: two capsules about one hour before bedtime. Children 12-16 years of age: one capsule about one hour before bedtime. Herbal Sleep dosage can be doubled, under the supervision of a health care practitioner.
Are there any special precautions or warnings?
Do not drive or operate machinery for 8 hours after taking herbal sleep. Alcohol will compound the drowsiness caused by Herbal Sleep, and should be used with caution. If you are using Herbal Sleep continuously, then we recommend taking a break from the product for one week after every four weeks of use, to reduce the chance of developing tolerance.
