Nettle root reduces the binding of testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), resulting in lower levels of inactive “bound” testosterone and higher levels of active “free” testosterone.
PROPRIETARY NAME (and dosage form): Nettle Root Extract (capsules) COMPOSITION: Each capsule contains the following as active ingredients: Nettle root 20:1 extract...........................................250mg Inactive ingredients: Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatin free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian – flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide. Contains no colourants, preservatives, lactose, gluten, yeast, starch or artificial fillers. Contains plant extracts and natural fillers, with no colourants added - therefore the colour of the capsule contents may vary slightly from batch to batch. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: Nettle root extract is believed to work by numerous mechanisms to reduce benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP). Nettle root extract has been shown to inhibit the binding of SHBG to the prostate cell membrane. In addition to inhibiting SHBG binding, at least six constituents of neetle root inhibit aromatase, reducing the conversion of androgens to estrogens. Nettle root has also been demonstated to reduce the proliferation of BPH-tissue. Nettle root also has anti-inflammatory effects by reducing leukotriene and prostaglandin synthesis. INDICATIONS: Nettle root has 5-alpha reductase enzyme blocking effects, and is therefore useful for problems associated with an enlarged prostate, such as frequent or difficult urination. Nettle root also binds to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thereby increasing levels of free testosterone. Free testosterone is essential for sexual arousal, heart health, immune function and maintenance of lean muscle mass. Nettle root also blocks aromatase enzymes, thereby reducing the conversion of testosterone into cancer forming estrogens in men. CONTRA-INDICATIONS: There are no known contra-indications. WARNINGS: Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. Safety in children has not been established. INTERACTIONS: Antidiabetic medicines: There is some evidence that nettle root can decrease blood sugar levels. Use with caution if you are on blood glucose lowering medications. Antihypertensives: There is some evidence that nettle root can decrease blood pressure. Use with caution if you are on blood pressure lowering medications. CNS depressants: There is evidence that nettle root extract might have CNS depressant activity and may potentiate the effects of antidepressants. Lithium: Nettle root is thought to have diuretic effects and might reduce excretion of lithium and this may lead to increased levels of lithium. Warfarin: There is some concern that nettle root may decrease the anticoagulant effects of medicines such as warfarin. Dose adjustments of anti-coagulants may be required. PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING: Not to be taken by pregnant and breastfeeding women. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Adults: Take 1-2 capsules twice or three times daily, with or shortly after meals. Not to be taken by individuals under 18 years of age. SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Side effects: Nettle root extract is generally considered safe when used as directed. Occasional side effects include gastrointestinal complaints, sweating, fluid retention, a reduction in blood pressure and allergic skin reactions. KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. In the case of accidental overdose of the product, contact the nearest hospital or poison control centre. IDENTIFICATION: Clear vegetarian capsule shell (size 0) containing with light brown contents. PRESENTATION: White HDPE container with white HDPE screw cap and seal for protection. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Store in a cool dry place, out of the reach of children.
