Product Information The most promising use for Glucosamine is in the treatment of osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.), which degrade cartilage, Glucosamine may not only relieve symptoms of joint pain and tenderness but actually stop or reverse the degenerative process. Phytosterols (anti-inflammatory-through it’s steroidal mechanism i.e. decreases cortisol & increases DHEA levels, immune system modulator i.e. fights infections especially those caused, post exercise, from high levels of cortisol/stress. PROPRIETARY NAME (and dosage form): Phyto-Joint Formula (capsules) COMPOSITION: Each capsule contains the following as active ingredients: • Glucosamine-vegan (Vege Cosamine™)...............500mg • Phytosterols.......................................................50mg Inactive ingredients: Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatin free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian – flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide. Contains no colourants, preservatives, lactose, gluten, yeast, starch or artificial fillers. Contains plant extracts and natural fillers, with no colourants added - therefore the colour of the capsule contents may vary slightly from batch to batch. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION: Glucosamine is an amino-monosaccharide that is the principal substrate used in the biosynthesis of macromolecules that comprise articular cartilage. It is believed to play a role in cartilage formation and repair. Unlike prostaglandin inhibitors, which have been associated with deterioration of joints in osteoarthritis, glucosamine increases the synthesis of proteoglycans, chondrocytes isolated from human osteoarthritic articular cartilage and may be associated with disease modifying effects. Phytosterols seem to play a role in inflammation and osteoarthritis by the inhibition of IL-6 and TNF-alpha activated monocyte activation. INDICATIONS: Phyto-Joint Formula contains glucosamine and phytosterols. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and healing support for joints. Glucosamine benefits the joints by alleviating pain, reducing inflammation, healing damaged tissues and improving motion. Research indicate that glucosamine may be an effective treatment for improving joint mobility. Phytosterols (derived from plants) help prevent inflammation and reduce pain. CONTRA-INDICATIONS: There are no known contra-indications. WARNINGS: Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. INTERACTIONS: Warfarin: Glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Antimitotic chemotherapy: Theoretically, glucosamine might induce resistance to etoposide and doxorubicin by reducing the medicines inhibition of topoisomerase II, an enzyme required for DNA replication in tumour cells. Paracetamol: Anecdotal reports have indicated that glucosamine might decrease pain control in individuals with osteoarthritis. Anti-diabetic medicines: Preliminary research has suggested that glucosamine might increase insulin resistance or decrease insulin production. This may be a concern that glucosamine might worsen diabetes and decrease the effectiveness of diabetes medicines. Ezetimibe: Ezetimibe inhibits intestinal absorption of phytosterols and reduces plasma concentration. Pravastatin: There is some evidence that pravastatin can lower blood levels of phytosterols. PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING: Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, do not use. DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Adults and children over 12 years of age: For acute conditions: Take 1-2 capsules three times per day. Maintenance dosage: Take 1 capsule twice daily. Take with or shortly after meals. Children 7-12 years of age: Take half the adult dose. Not suitable for vegetarians. SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: Side effects: Side effects may include gastrointestinal upset, drowsiness, skin reactions and headache. Special precautions: Asthma: Glucosamine might exacerbate asthma by an unidentified allergic mechanism. Use glucosamine cautiously in individuals with asthma. Shellfish allergy: There is concern that glucosamine might cause allergic reactions in individuals who are sensitive to shellfish. Iodine allergy: There is concern that glucosamine might cause allergic reactions in individuals who are sensitive to shellfish. Surgery: Glucosamine might affect blood glucose levels. Theoretically, glucosamine might interfere with blood glucose control during and after surgical procedures. KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT: Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. In the case of accidental overdose of the product, contact the nearest hospital or poison control centre. IDENTIFICATION: Clear vegetarian capsule shell (size 0) containing white contents. PRESENTATION: White HDPE container with white HDPE screw cap and seal for protection. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Store in a cool dry place, out of the reach of children.
